Carac 3313

Martin James

Martin joined Carac Pty.Ltd in 1979. By this stage Martin was an experienced sales manager, was undertaking further studies in marketing, and was excited about the prospect of taking an existing family business forward.

Carac, a new venture of Dandenong Car Wreckers, commenced trading in Lonsdale St Dandenong in 1967 to sell new parts, accessories and performance equipment, and was at the forefront of the Speed Shop era.

In the mid 1970’s it was decided that Carac, in order to address an emerging niche market caused by the growing popularity of caravanning and camping holidays, would establish Carac’s Dandenong Caravan Accessories.

Early growth enabled expansion of this business to include trailer sales, leading to an era of manufacturing our own trailers under the Carac name.

A move to 19-21 Dandenong Frankston Road in 1982, was a result of the continued growth of Carac’s Dandenong Caravan Accessories.

In 1985, Martin together with other Automotive Parts and Accessory retailers, joined forces to form Autobarn.

From 1985 to 2007 Martin was a Director, Shareholder and Franchisor of Autobarn.

Both businesses have evolved over the years, and the products and services offered are constantly changing.

The move to 2 Zenith Road Dandenong South in 2013, saw a return to the early days, with both Carac operations under the same roof after 31 years at separate sites.

The move allowed the critical issues of tired retail spaces, poor parking, lack of workshop facilities and duplication of roles to be addressed, and the results are evident to long term clients.

Today, Martin’s son Ashley as Group General Manager directs day to day operations of both business’s, whilst Martin maintains an active interest, taking more of an advisory role.
